Musafa, an unusual fast-growing Acropora with a colour palette that seems to change completely as it matures. We’ve never been completely certain of the species on this one, but that’s part of its character — it has its own distinctive growth form, with chunky upright branches and beautifully pronounced corallites.
Young growth carries a softer green-to-golden base with darker red-brown corallites, while the growing tips develop cooler pale blue, lilac and purple tones. As it settles and grows out, brighter greens, yellows and warmer pink-to-orange hues can begin appearing through the colony, giving it a subtle rainbow effect that becomes much more obvious at size.
It’s also a quick grower, readily building a broad encrusted base before throwing out multiple upright branches. The combination of fast growth, chunky structure and constantly changing colour makes this one far more impressive as a mature colony than a single frag initially suggests.
Green, gold and warm earthy tones below, shifting into lilac, blue and purple through the growing tips — Musafa is a strange one, a fast one, and definitely one of our more unusual Acros.
