Kung Pao, a seriously bright Montipora with a colour combination every bit as punchy as the name. This easy-to-keep collector piece develops intensely saturated golden-yellow to warm orange flesh, peppered with contrasting lime-to-neon-green polyps and finished with a brighter pink growing rim as it matures.

Young pieces can be heavily gold-dominant, but the real character develops as the colony gains size. The textured surface creates pockets of deeper orange and yellow while the green polyps sit scattered across the raised growth. Around the active edges, that contrasting pink adds another completely different layer of colour.

Kung Pao initially encrusts strongly before plating and eventually scrolling, creating folds and overlapping growth where the gold, green and pink become increasingly separated and dramatic. Despite all that colour, it’s a straightforward and rewarding Montipora to grow.

Molten gold, fiery orange, neon-green polyps and a hot-pink rim — Kung Pao brings plenty of heat without actually setting fire to the reef.
